Hey Tim! I’m extremely sad that Keane isn’t coming to Atlanta on this tour.
Tim Rice Oxley: We haven’t been there in awhile now. We would love to come back. We need to spend more time in the States.

Here, people think of Keane as being a quintessentially British band.
TRO: We’ve always had a feel that America has embraced Keane from very early on. I’m a great lover of America. I keep saying I’m going to move there. I haven’t yet plucked
up the courage … but one day.

Is it true you do a lot of traveling by train?
TRO: Yeah, we try to. We haven’t always done things that way. When we started touring, we kind of flew everywhere like everyone does. None of us enjoy the process of flying. It seems to be getting ever more miserable to go through an airport these days. When we were recording Perfect Symmetry, we’d had enough of flying, but we wanted to go to Berlin to record, and we ended up getting the overnight train to Berlin. It was such a revelation and a great bonding experience — the four of us taking off on this little adventure in the middle of the night, sitting in the bar and watching the towns of Europe go by. It really opened our eyes. You have this sense of real travel, one that’s been lost in the last 50 years since cheap air travel became the default mode of getting anywhere.

How did traveling around in trains inspire you as a songwriter? It must have, since you called the new record Night Train.
TRO: I’ve always had a love of trains. There’s a song called “Try Again” on our second album that has quite a bit of train imagery. The whole Night Train concept was borne out of a sense of adventure. That spirit came to represent that whole period of our lives last year, just kind of traveling around the world playing in support of Perfect Symmetry. Those are probably some of our happiest moments are when we were jumping on board a train in Europe or Russia or Japan or even in the States. When traveling’s such a big part of your life and you make a little change like that, it makes a huge difference.

Why is Night Train an EP? There are 9 songs.
TRO: It was a chaotic process. The whole concept of the EP came from that spirit of unplanned willingness to embrace the unknown. We were out on tour. We were in Boston, and we realized we had 3 or 4 songs that were finished but didn’t seem to fit anywhere; they didn’t feel like we wanted to save them another two years until a proper Keane record was finished. Those were the two K’Naan collaborations and “My Shadow,” and we had the idea of doing a cover of this 1980′s Japanese pop song. There was a sense of fun, and rather than saying we’ve got to stick to the plan that everyone does of a record every two years, and it’s gotta be 12 songs and it’s gotta be promoted up to the eyeballs. We got sort of carried away with it and before we knew it, we had 9 tracks. I like that, because we’re giving people more than you wouldn’t expect from and EP. I’m pleased to have that stuff out there, and it’s become much more of an event – if that’s not too pretentious a word – than we’d ever planned. It’s dong amazingly well over here in the UK. It’s been really cool.

How did you connect with rapper, K’Naan?
TRO: I know Tom was a fan of his first record, and he got me into it. We heard he was a Keane fan. So I called him up and he’s a lovely guy – very relaxed, very enthusiastic. I sent him some ideas and he loved them. The next thing we were in the studio in London and three days later we had some completely new songs, which is unusual for an English indie band.

Both K’Naan songs are great. I love “Stop for a Minute,” but “Looking Back,” with that great allusion to the Rocky theme song, is brill.
TRO: We could have certainly overthought that. It’s very much kind of in the hip-hop spirit, sampling a great hook like that. In the world of hip-hop it’s not at all unusual and pretty much a standard way of working up an idea for a song. For an indie band, it’s unheard of. Having taken the step to do that, it felt so fun and so exciting to hear. I think we felt really proud that we had the guts to do it.

Was working with producer Jon Brion really influential on you, because your sound changed around the time of Perfect Symmetry. Did you guys have a lot of the ideas of how you wanted that record to sound before you got together?
TRO: We had some building blocks, but we didn’t have the confidence to make that leap into the unknown. I guess we were worried whether we were capable of making a record that was much more eletcro – it’s very different record than the first two. With Jon Brion, having someone we respected so much and someone who had made such brilliant music come and encourage us … he was very honest about what we had done so far. He had this attitude of ” You can try whatever you want, bearing in mind if it doesn’t work, you can just delete it.” That sounds obvious, but it’s quite hard to have that spirit of being willing to make a fool of yourself in the studio. If you really do try stuff that’s uncomfortable, sometimes you just sound like an idiot at the end of it. But he gave us the confidence to realize that’s part of the fun of making a record. That’s why the great albums are as exciting as they are , because there’s a spirit of willingness to make a fool of yourself in the studio in search of those moments of inspiration.

Tell me about some of your influences, especially as the piano player.
TRO: Piano was the instrument I started out on as a child, but one of the things that made our band quite unique is that most of my influences were guitarists or electronic music like Depeche Mode or Kraftwerk, or a lot of that 1980s stuff … people like The Pet Shop Boys, and U2 and REM and Radiohead and Bowie – classic bands – people who are known for being more generally about guitars. I guess I took that sense of that kind of expansive, melodic guitar parts and used it. Rather than being about twiddly solos, it’s much more about creating sonic landscapes for the vocals and lyrics to fit into – a kind of impressionistic approach to sound. I think taking that inspiration and applying it to a piano is probably what made Keane’s sound unique. It’s a pretty bastardized approach to playing piano that would probably be disapproved of by anyone who’s been classically trained. I think it made for quite interesting results.

What about your activist work? You’ve done a lot of work with War Child, Make Poverty History, and you played Live 8. Does everybody in the band feel strongly about being involved in those kind of things?
TRO: Fans and musicians have always been so divided about whether music and politics, for want of a better word, should mix. I’ve never really understood that. I think a lot of the best music comes from a spirit of wanting to make the world a better place. There’s always room for a good old love story in pop music. But that in itself comes from wanting to make the world a better place. When I was growing up, U2 were the band who influenced me the most. Even now, 20 some odd years later, I still pretty much hero worship them. I remember seeing Bono onstage and finding the stuff that he was saying much more eye opening and inspirational and stirring than anything I was seeing on the 9 o’clock news on the BBC. As a teenager, it was something I could connect to, much more than what the gray-haired guy on the TV from the House of Commons was saying. I’ve always felt that if you’re given that stage, you have an amazing power to do good. I’ve never understood why people look down on that. War Child especially, we’ve had a relatively longstanding relationship with. If you can just turn up and play music and somehow actually do some good, it’s pretty easy to do that.

How does it feel to be back on the road again?
TRO: We’re the best we’ve ever been as a live band. We’ve just finished a UK tour with a lot of outdoor shows. We’ve really grown in confidence. The fact that the EP – - something that was thrown together pretty loosely and pretty quickly — went to number 1 over here [in England] gave us a real injection of confidence. And all of the sudden we have a few more crowd favorites in our catalog than we had a few months ago. We normally have a little acoustic section in our show, too. I think Tom is the best frontman on the planet now. I really want people to see that. I hope anyone who comes to see us has a really amazing night, because we’re not happy unless they do.

the jetlag has kicked in, i've been up since 4am. just found some cookies in my hotel room, and i've sent the "who's up for breakfast?" email. it's always the way when you travel 8 hours west - i just cannot stay asleep beyond about 4 on the first morning. it's still dark outside, and it was quite chilly last night, so i'm happy to stay inside and post a few pics from last night. nothing amazing, i'm afraid, and probably a few repeats from the last time i was here! i simply love the neon signs and shopfronts you get in america. they aren't unique to america, of course, but there's something about them that you don't quite get elsewhere... or maybe it's just the context. anyway, expect to see a few on the blog over the coming weeks. Beth and I flew in yesterday, the rest of the crew having come straight from Lisbon. we met Colin for some dinner at Lori's Diner. I ordered the onion rings - just look at them... they were stunning. Milkshake was pretty special, too.

Tim is a shy, nervous man, but he has finally given in! He will be singing for Scottish fans on June 21. It made me laugh when I heard Tom threatened to storm off stage, leaving Tim to sing for himself.

Don't worry Tim, you will love singing for a crowd. I understand how he feels, because I've always been more of the quiet one, and my bestfriend has always been the cocky singer. But yesterday I sang for a crowd, and I loved it, even did most of the talking. I have a feeling Tim will feel the same :)

Well thats all I have to say! BTW Facebook states that Tom is now single, true or untrue?

Tom Chaplin, lead vocalist with alternative rock band Keane has got hot, and he’s the cover star of GT’s new music issue. In a world exclusive interview with a gay publication, he talks candidly about his history with drugs, discusses his appeal to a gay audience and describes what it was like touring with Rufus Wainwright. He also reveals plans for a potential solo album…

On drugs:

“I think drugs should be made legal really. And people should be educated, learn about these things because all drugs charities say we’re going nowhere with prohibition… I’m sure the government can make lots of taxes from it and build us some new roads! That kind of thing! We could pay less council tax, you know what I mean? There’s a sort of Daily Mail sensibility towards drugs in this country which is just unhelpful.”

On support from gay fans:

“I think the gay community is responsible for so many great things, especially culturally – great musicians and great artists and great forward thinking I suppose. There’s a hot bed for creativity and imagination and so much good stuff comes out of it culturally that to be respected by the gay community is something that we’re very proud of.”

On the possibility of a solo album:

“It’s slowly becoming more of a reality I think. I’ve got quite a few songs… They’re quite different to Keane songs. They’re very melodic, they’re incredibly melodic. They’re bursting at the seams with too much melody most of the time probably! I’ve always been more of a McCartney man than a Lennon man if that makes sense.”

Okay, for those who have seen it, I have to say I am slightly disappointed. I mean, the music was great, and Tom looked sexy as ever, but it just wasn't a Keane vid. It looks like the kind of hip-hop MTV over and over again. I suppose a true fan would stick by them no matter what direction they go in, and thats all we can do. Telling someone that you hate them because they have changed isn't gonnna make them want to change back.

Well this is an extremely interesting article,
KEANE frontman TOM CHAPLIN says he has been saved from drink and drugs - by golf.

Tom speaks to Biz, after recording Stop For A Minute, about how golf helped him out. He apparrently feels much more comfortable being himself, though he still does drink once iin awhile. Tom also metions how he has enjoyed seeing the guys after so long.
You can also hear Stop for a Minute, which is actaully growing on me. When I first heard it, I hated it, but now I realize that I hated the rap solo. The lyrics are actaully very nice :)

I dont know if you remember, but awhile ago I think was Tom that metioned that BBH was being translated into French. Well here it is, and in honor of Haiti too! From the Hear To Help Fund cd, availible at American Egale until March 19th. I admitt that I'm not quite sure if its Tom's singing. I don't think so, but not 100% sure. if it is, then Tom's voice sound so cute in French. I'm giggling like an idiot listening to it.

Mr. Rice Oxley has read yet another book! This one by Alex James, the bass player of Blur. Tim seems to be draw biogrpahies of band members. Especially these classics! I cna't help but remember when Tom was accused of trashing Blur. Whether thats true or not, (I don't think that sounds like Tom, do you?) Tim seems to love them.

She Has No Time Featured in ABC's Brother's and Sisters

Well was hanging around the forums and found out that She Has No Time has been featured in an ABC show. I wont go on, but I wanted to say that it was played in the scene where The main charractor Kitty undergoes her surgery.

EP Announced!
We're very pleased to announce the tracklisting of Keane's new eight-song EP, Night Train, which will be released globally on 10th May 2010. The tracklisting is as follows:

1. House Lights
2. Back In Time
3. Stop For A Minute (feat K'Naan)
4. Clear Skies
5. Ishin Denshin (You've Got To Help Yourself) (feat Tigarah)
6. Your Love
7. Looking Back (feat K'Naan)
8. My Shadow

The EP was recorded in various studios during the Perfect Symmetry world tour that saw the band playing to packed arenas in 28 countries. Highlights include Keane's genre-busting collaborations with Somali/Canadian rapper K'Naan, the irrepressible Stop For A Minute and the Rocky-inspired Looking Back. "I think those tracks show us in a completely different light," says Keane frontman Tom Chaplin.

Other definite standouts include Ishin Denshin (You've Got To Help Yourself), an addictive electro-pop number which features Japanese baile funk MC Tigarah; the gorgeous, 80s-flavoured Your Love, which hangs around a rare lead vocal from the band's Ivor Novello-winning songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley; and fans' live favourite My Shadow.

Night Train will be released on CD and download - and you can pre-order a special numbered edition of the EP through the Keane Store right now!

I must say, that I guess this is the final goodbye of the old Keane. I never thought I'd see the day where rap would be entwined with anything Keane... Well, even though I hate rap, I will give it a chance for the sake of Keane. Who knows? Maybe Keane will make it better. We will jjust have to see

This absolutly made my day! I guess the album will be called, The Night Train. Nice choice, I must say. Anyone remember a song that had the words 'late night train' in it? I do :)
Okay, anyway, You can download and preorder starting Dec. 2, 2009.
I'm definatly looking foward to hearing Your Love, and You've gotta Help Yourself'. I am somewhat glad that the band has gotten back into the whole neutral stage agian. Not depressed, not overly Pop, but like H & F. I think they finally know who they are int he music world.

One whole year of PS! They have really outdone themselves this album. Now all we have to do is wait for the next, which I'm sure will be brillant. Thank you Keane for all the hard work you put into this album. We all apreciate it. I wonder what the next album will be called. They have kind of changed there style with each album, so I can't even being to imagine what it could be named.

I have one question:

I just think it truely amazing what Mr. Chaplin and the rest of RwandaAid, have been doing. David didn't waste his brains after he retired from being a school teacher. His ideas were ace, and I would have never even thought of some of them.

Cris and Andrew Interviews part 2

Heeeellooooo!

I just saw part to of the fan interviews, and it just about made my day!
Anyway, The questions and answers were brillant! Tim likes squid... Never would have thought, but is looks amazing on when they perpare it on BBC America. I believe its 'something Ramsey's F word'. Okay, I'm getting of the piont agian.
That the story of when Tom hurt his leg and tried to hide it was soooo cute. I remember doing things like that. Hell, I still do things like that! LOL. I wonder how old he was, then and when he hit his head. I would have loved to hear form Tim and Richard, too.

Well thats all I got. I'll have to watch it a couple more times.
BTW I couldn't find green check PJs :( but I did find a very Tim-ish jacket

I watched it again and realized I forgot some things.
Aparrently, Tom answer my question which was 'What would each band memeber be doing if they were in the music business'. Well at least for Tom. I guess Tom would have been Futbol player. (please exuse my spelling, I just wanted to recognize the distinction between football and futbol)
Another thing i thought was awsome: Tom thinking Tim was the worried guienus and himself being the joyus simpleton. Don't worry Tom, your not a simpleton :). I wonder what Richard would be... *ponders to self*.

I loved their ansewers! Especially the ones to the last question. I completely agreed with Tom. Thats actually what I want for the world, though I know that it would backfire somehow. Richard's was surprisingly true! And very funny. I can't wait for Tim's ansewer. I'll be sure to write more later, but for now I must go.
